Isaiah 53: Jesus Christ suffered for all mankind

The Jewish people were looking for a Messiah that would come in power and glory, brazenly and boldly delivering His people from the oppressor.  That, however,  is not the depiction of the Messiah as illustrated in Isaiah 53; nor is it the picture of Jesus Christ.  Isaiah 53 beautifully illustrates the purpose of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and reveals him as the “Divine Sufferer” or “Man of Sorrows.”

Isaiah 53 is powerful as it is the first time in Scriptures that such an amazing depiction of the coming Messiah has been revealed.  Jesus Christ is described as the “Suffering Servant” and the passage clearly shows that Jesus will die a painful death as the payment for sin.  As the Jews were waiting for a heroic warrior to arrive, Isaiah delivered the startling prophecy of a suffering servant, one who was bruised, rejected, pierced and humiliated.  It is no wonder that the passage begins with the question, “Who has believed our report?”

The Gospel message may seem unbelievable to many, just as Isaiah questioned in the beginning of Isaiah 53.  Who would think that God would send His son to suffer and die in order to bring life abundantly?  In many religions, man continually works and strives in order to better him or herself in order to attain spiritual wisdom and acceptance.  In Christianity, the opposite is true.  Christianity states that while mankind was in his feeble, sinful state, God sent his Son, to be humiliated, cursed, afflicted and brutally murdered in order that man might be acceptable.
Oh what a free gift the shed blood of Jesus Christ truly is.  Man does not need to strive for it, does not need to work to receive it and does not need to participate in the work of Calvary in order to accept it.  All that is needed is a humble heart, willing to believe the prophetic report given by the prophet Isaiah in 53.

“Who hath believed our report and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?” Isaiah 53:1.  Do you believe the report of the Lord?  Do you believe that Jesus Christ suffered on the cross of Calvary for your sins?
