Over the last year, Zac Efron has been quietly going about his work, appearing in a few movies and trying to recapture the magic of his "High School Musical" success. And, oh yeah, secretly entering rehab for a nasty coke habit.
According to an article published by The Justice.org on Sept. 23, the teen idol is just the latest victim of the so-called "Disney Curse" which has struck countless child stars since first being identified as infecting Annette Funicello in the 1960s.
Unlike Lindsay Lohan, who splashes her rehab stints in all the tabloids, Zac Efron was able to complete his therapy in secret and left, apparently fully recovered, in April. It wasn't until recently that an anonymous "insider" spilled the beans to TMZ.
The Disney Curse has a long history. At first, it was viewed as a death knell for any child star trying to develop a serious adult career. Remember the "Beach Blanket Bingo" fiasco? It was light-hearted, good teen fun. And a terrible movie. But since then, things have become much darker.
Since "The Mickey Mouse Club" was revitalized in 1989 on the Disney Channel, some of its original cast members have gone on to be the biggest names in music, TV and movies. And, some of the most dysfunctional adults in the world.
But, apparently, the curse isn't isolated to Disney TV. Child stars from dozens of Disney movies have had some infamous run-ins with the law, mainly for DUIs or being arrested for illegal drugs. And, unfortunately, much worse.
Here's a slideshow showing some of the most famous examples of stars allegedly afflicted by the Disney curse. It's hard to say whether there's something to the legend, or if it's just the consequences of elite, over-privileged, bratty children turning into elite, over-privileged, bratty adults.
The real question is, when will Zac Efron start twerking?
What do you think? Is there such a thing as the Disney curse? Or are these "kids" just out of control?
