Is your child willing to give back?

See also

For some Christmas is a time for giving.

For others Christmas is a time for receiving.

During the holiday season parents are asking their children what they want for Christmas and in some cases the parents are delivering big time.

Some parents will spend to the point where they will go into debt just to make sure their children have a good Christmas. In this time of receiving are parents remembering to teach their children about the gift of giving?

There are some children who only think about themselves. These children will ask just about anyone they encounter, "Are you going to get me something for Christmas?" At the same time these same children are stumped when asked, "What are you going to do to give back this holiday season?"

For some reason there are parents who get so caught up into making sure their children have a good Christmas until they never think about the idea of teaching their children about the gift of giving. Instead of spending a lot of money and going into debt parents could focus their energy on helping their children to understand that no all children are going to get something for Christmas. These parents could also ask their children to give back by donating some of their gently used toys to children who in some cases would go without. Parents could take it a step further by asking their children to give up one of their gifts for someone else. Meaning picking out a gift to purchase and giving it to a child who would not get a gift. This is a great opportunity to expose children to the idea of giving back.

Another way children can be taught to give back is to take them to a shelter or a church where Christmas dinner is being served and have them to participate. This is a good way for children to understand the importance of giving back.

Before you know Christmas will come and go. Parents can make sure that this will be the beginning of a Christmas tradition where their children will do more than asking for something. They will want to give as well.

Are you the parent who teaches their child the importance of giving? Please share your story below.
