James Carlini of Wisconsin Technology News wrote a column about Michigan Avenue, saying it's full of "land sharks."

Carlini visited the city a couple weeks ago and said he noticed gangs of juveniles roaming and searching for prey.

I pulled a report  from the Chicago Police Department's ClearMap, which showed a total of 84 incidents on the streets of the 42nd Ward - including seven on Michigan Avenue - from Aug. 3 through Aug. 16, 2010. These included pick-pocketing, larceny, disorderly conduct and simple battery.

I frequent Michigan Avenue and have never had a problem or seen suspicious activity. I'm mostly on the street during the weekday when it's light out, but I have been on it numerous times on the weekend and after-dark.

Do you think crime on Michigan Avenue, and specifically juveniles preying on tourists, is a problem? And if so, what do you think needs to be done? Do you have tips for tourists?

If you are a resident of Chicago, I encourage you to visit the CPD's CLEARpath website, which aims to link the department and the community. You can sign up for community crime alerts and daily news alerts, as well.
