When asked if it’s feasible to make it as an out country singer, Carmack recently told Out: “People I’ve spoken to say that at a certain level it’d be career suicide for somebody to come out of the closet. That’s a terrible kind of fame. I don’t think executives would give Will the time of day. That’s a damn shame, but in country music there’s a stigma that’s insurmountable.”
You may recall how Chely Wright came out as gay in 2010, and hasn’t exactly burned up the charts. She had a number one single with “Single White Female” back in 1999, but hasn’t hit the top ten since then. Therefore, the jury is still out on whether or not the waters are safe enough for a country singer to come out of the closet.
