Is the Artie Lange cliffhanger a planned bit?

Artie Lange has been missing from the Howard Stern Show fan radar for just under three weeks.

Artie Lange trackers, who normally offer updates on the tormented comedian's day-to-day schedule are now silent.  Even the Howard Stern Show's chief news correspondent Steve Langford from Howard 100 News is claiming to have no idea where Artie Lange is.  Rumors about the whereabouts of Artie Lange are running rampant on every Howard Stern Show message board and blog on the internet, including the rumor that the entire "Artie Lange cliffhanger" was just a planned "bit" by the Howard Stern Show and Sirius XM to boost ratings.

Artie Lange was last heard on the Howard Stern Show Wednesday, December 9th.  He was absent from the Howard Stern Show Thursday December 10th, and when the show returned on Monday, Howard Stern announced that Artie Lange had been ordered to take that entire next week off by Sirius XM management.  Shortly after the announcement, New York City comedy nightclub Comix posted on their website that comic Jim Florentine would be performing in Artie Lange's place at the upcoming scheduled performance.

The Artie Lange theory that seems to have the most backers is the one that suggests that the drug-addled, bipolar-ish, self-loathing comic genius has finally checked himself into an inpatient drug rehabilitation facility.

Morons who speculate that the Artie Lange cliffhanger seem to be ignoring the fact that it's a pretty big leap to say that an Artie Lange drug rehab suicidal depression cliffhanger would be enough for people unfamiliar with the show to suddenly scramble to buy a Sirius XM radio and subscribe before the Howard Stern Show returns January 4th, 2010.

Perhaps Sirius XM execs hoped that an Artie Lange cliffhanger would round up more members of the Howard Stern Show audience that never made the jump to Sirius XM with a juicy storyline?  No way.  The bulk of the Artie Lange drama started long after the Sirius XM switch.  At this point, you're either hooked on the Artie Lange soap opera or you're not.
