Is sugar worse than pot? Americans say yes, but what does President Obama think?

Is sugar worse than pot? Yes, according to a new poll conducted by Wall Street Journal/NBC News. The poll revealed some surprising results and it could possibly change the views of some of those who criticize marijuana use. As reported by the Wall Street Journal on March 12, Americans were asked their opinion on the most harmful of four substances and the following figures represent the results from the poll: tobacco (49%) and alcohol (24%) came in first and second place, followed by sugar (15%). Surprisingly, only 8% of respondents voted marijuana as the most harmful substance.

According to the above poll results, Americans do indeed believe sugar is worse than pot. Although the federal government still lists marijuana in the same category as heroin, ecstasy and hallucinogenic mushrooms, President Barack Obama recently said pot is no more dangerous than alcohol.

In January, Obama told the editor of the New Yorker, David Remnick, that he still views pot smoking in a negative light, but as a whole, the drug is not as bad for society as was believed in the past.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama told the New Yorker.
