Is Sex Really Considered Exercise?

It doesn’t take a scientist to tell you that sex can be a heart-pumping, sweat-drenched workout. But how much of a workout are you and your partner actually getting? And how many calories are being burned during each session?

According to a study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine, the “average” sex session lasts about 30 minutes and burns anywhere from 50 to 100 calories.

This statistic seems decent enough, right?

In reality, unless you’re Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie from Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and every session involves you flinging your partner from one end of the room to the next ⎯ for an hour straight ⎯ you’re probably not coming close to those numbers.

In other words, don’t turn in your gym membership just yet.

Instead, look at ways for you and your partner to optimize your sexual encounters, so you can make the most of your time between the sheets.

What better way to start the day than having your loved one caress you sensually in places that get your heart pumping and blood circulating? It sure beats the heck out of that annoying buzzing or chirping sound you call an alarm clock.

While most of us feel rushed in the morning, taking the time to engage in sexual activity can keep you looking and feeling young. Plus, more times than not, one spouse will wake up on the wrong side of the bed, while the other is cheerful. Early morning sex will help make sure you both are on the same page.

In the average yoga class, a person can burn anywhere between 100 to 300 calories per half an hour. By incorporating some of your favorite yoga poses into your “sexy-time,” you not only increase the number of calories burned, but you also engage your core, by focusing on the pelvic and hip flexor muscles.

Like with any workout, experimenting with your routine not only keeps your body guessing, but it allows you to use different muscle groups for stabilization. By doing this, you'll not only achieve a more intense workout, but you'll also have a much more satisfied partner.

Research has shown that women who exercise regularly have more active sex lives, reach orgasm more quickly, and are more easily aroused than sedentary women.

Also, men who frequently engage in intense workouts are linked to increased testosterone levels, which may stimulate sexual interest and behavior.

Remember, sex is extremely healthy for your body ⎯ both physically and mentally ⎯ but since the intensity varies from session to session, it’s important to incorporate a regular exercise routine in between your erotic escapades.

Be creative.
