Freddie Roach is one of boxing's most respected trainers. Quinito Henson is one of Philippine Sports media's most respected and credible writers. The two are currently on the opposite end of conflicting stories.
Henson quoted Roach talking about his ward Manny Pacquiao's next opponent Shane Mosley in one of his recent columns for Philstar.com saying, “It won’t be an easy fight for Manny,” said Roach who arrived here to celebrate Pacquiao’s 32nd birthday and was scheduled to leave Manila for Los Angeles last night. “I think he’s a tougher opponent than (Andre) Berto or (Juan Manuel) Marquez. He can punch with either hand. But if the fight pushes through, I’ll insist on a drug test. He’s been known to take steroids and it shows in his body.”
In response, Roach sat down with boxing writer Lem Satterfield and categorically denied having anything to do with the quotes published by Henson calling the respected Filipino journalist a liar. "That's a lie. I never said that. We turned that [drug testing] down once ourselves, so I would have to be a hypocrite to have said that. So some Filipino writer has written that I had said that, but that's not true. So I never said that. The thing is that I think that we're taking the fight that would bring the most money to the table, and that's what the deciding factor will be," said Roach in the article published on boxingscene.com.
Something's got to give.
I have reached out to Henson regarding this issue. I find it hard to believe that a veteran and highly-decorated and respected journalist like Henson would make up such quotes. If he did however, it would be equivalent to career suicide as he pretty much just threw away his credibility. Roach is a revered figure in boxing and is considered this era's best trainer, but his credibility in making statements isn't any better than Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum who's famous for saying "yesterday I was lying, today I am telling the truth." Remember when Roach was considering training Antonio Margarito and insisted that he believes Margarito did not know about his illegal handwraps against Mosley, only to turn around and say the opposite when they fought him, even likening the incident to attempted murder?
We'll get to the bottom of this.
In another issue addressed by Roach in the same article by Henson, 18-year-old light welterweight stud prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. is back in Arizona and no longer training with the Hall of Fame trainer. Roach was quoted saying, “He’s back in Phoenix,” and added “It was difficult to deal with his dad.” Benavidez dad Jose Sr., has said in a previous interview with FanHouse.com's Elie Seckbach that the move back to Arizona was because Roach did not have time to work with his son and was too busy with all of his other fighters. Roach has been training with a lot of fighters ranging from Amir Khan to even the likes of UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and making top dollar doing so. A lot of the lesser known boxers under his wing have been quoted multiple times in the past saying they are having difficulties getting time with Roach due to the in-demand trainer's hectic schedule.

Henson misquoted and got ahead of himself thinking he would know what team pacquiao will want and what Roach will expect. I don't know why he would write such a thing but then again "chismis" is common back home. in this case it was in the form of a misquote from Roach via Henson. Next time i hope the journalist would get his facts straight.
There may be some blame on both sides here. Quinito MAY have misquoted Freddie or had PUT words into his mouth by finishing Roach's sentence for him. Quinito is quite a fast talker.
Then again, as our diligent d'Source has pointed out, Freddie has been known to make some audacious statement only to retract it. Dennis brought out here one of the many instances.
When Freddie was in the Phils a few months ago, he did complain about journalists printing out stories based on hearsays, without first or second hand accounts.
You cant count on Henson,he exaggerates when he report things,he done that before when Allan Caidic fell and hit his head on a game versus R,Jaworskys Ginebra,he critizise Jawo and said things right on the spot which mostly professional commentator would never do,he acted like a judge on that icsident trying to insinuate negativities agains Jawo..
Henson is a wannabe . . . he abuses his position . . . he makes comments back upped by his prejudices/preferences rather than credible references or facts . . . an example . . . did u read articles made by him just before the first fight of Pacquiao and marquez? he watered Manny down . . . . he throws out analysis adulterated by his own prejudices.
come to think of it, a fight with mosley with olympic style drug testing is good for manny. But it should be done without accusing mosley or insinuating that he still uses enhancement drugs. It should be done because that was what floyd did & what manny can also do, and even better.
Roach has Parkinson's and it's his nature to talk a lot. Giving interviews left and right may well led Roach to forget things he said or thought previously, as he might have in few instances mistook his right from his left. Quinito and the rest of us might as well forgive Roach. What's a tiny misquote between "friends" anyway?

THERE IS NO indication that these claims contradict each other. Yes, it was difficult to deal with Benavidez's dad because the dad insisted that Roach devoted more of his time with his son but Roach cannot possibly do that because he has so many fighters to tend to. It's as simple as that.

Henson keeps on repeating that Roach is his friend. But then, who needs an enemy if Roach has a friend like Henson.
this is not really a big deal. these are two respected gentlemen. we made mistakes. just get this over with and not blow this out of proportion. not even good enough to write an article about it. move on.
Chino and quinito started to be known in basketball but were clown commentators in boxing. Now that Phil basketball sucks in international competition these guys are trying hard to fit into boxing. I find it very irritating listening to these guys because whenever I'm watching boxing because I often hear basketball lingo during the basketball match. They can't even resist greeting a lot of ball players during the boxing match. These guys stinks and for me they have no credibility in boxing.
