What is The Board?
The Board is an interesting short film produced by Bethesda Baptist Church and released nationwide on DVD August 4, 2009. Although in media hype The Board has been compared to two of my favorite Christian movie classics like Chariots of Fire and Fireproof, that is misleading. The Board is much shorter, much less entertaining, and much more of a direct teaching film.
The Soul as a Board Room
The Board takes a look at the internal struggle involved in salvation by presenting the soul as a board room made up of various board members: Mind, Emotion, Will, Memory, Conscience and Heart, with each board member having a say in a person's life, and all members having to be in agreement before a person can accept Christ. The Board explores personal internal conflicts as it examins difficult questions that lead to eternal consequences.
A Board Room Full of Varvels
Based on a script written by Bethesda Baptist Church member, Gary Varvel, over 60 members from the church were involved in The Board's production. Gary Varvel, an editorial cartoonist for the Indianapolis Star, enlisted his son Brett Varvel, a two-time Dave Letterman scholarship winner at Ball State University, to direct the film, and most of the main cast members were Varvels.
The Board an Excellent Teaching Tool
The Board would make an excellent teaching tool for churches and Christian schools, as it can be viewed in 40 minutes, and it is at times both moving and stirring. However, if you are looking for a movie like Chariots of Fire or Fireproof to add to your Christian entertainment movie library, this short evangelistic film may not fit the bill.

The film sounds like an interesting premise. I may want to see this one now!
