When it comes to our children we always worry. The day our children become sick our parent worries are at least tripled. When in doubt please call your family doctor.
One question parents live with is, when should we keep our children at home from school? Although your family doctor is the one to ask about your children’s health, there are three signs your child should stay home from school.
(This information is based on the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Public Health association, and Colorado Department of public Health and Environment.*)
- Your child does not feel well enough to participate in school activities.*
- Your child requires more care than his/her teacher is able to provide without affecting the health, safety, and education of other children.*
- Your child’s illness is such in which temporary exclusion is recommended.*
For example:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Flu symptoms: Fever with behavior changes or illness, including fever higher than 100 degree F with a cough, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, vomiting and diarrhea.
- Conjunctivitis: (pink eye) Flu symptoms
- Strep Throat: Flu symptoms

Tough question to answer some mornings!... Great video and recipe for chicken soup - never tried adding parsnip and turnip!
My eldest grand-daughter loves school and never misses a day. When the youngest one started, she wanted to be home every day, so she continually complained of being sick.
You really have to know your children too.
Good to remind people. Since I substitute teach, we appreciate when parents don't send in their sick kids :}

Great tips parents should know and understand. A very sick child will only spread the germs to others and be sent home anyway. Best to keep them home and return back with a note. Call the school for homework assignments if it is going to be an extended period and ask for a tutor if it is not contagious. Mine don't miss school - somehow only get sick on school breaks and extended holidays. Not good for us but better for them. Funny now that I think about it. Thanks for sharing the rules and the recipe.
Great tips Beverly...sorry about your "holiday" sick days...maybe you have a great recipe for Victoria, below she mentions Won Ton soup, that does sound good, do you know how to make the noodles?
Chicken and WonTon soups are the best when you don't feel well and lots of fluids should be pushed.
The article is great for coping with a child who is not feeling well ;( It's hard when the parent has to work and is unable to stay home with the child, but good child providers offer love during this time of need. Thanks Rhonda ;)
Yes, what I have found is many parents are using grandparents when their children get sick...Oh and do those children come back to school with wonderful stories of how they were taken care of!
Good tips for people with children. It isn't always easy to tell when it is best to keep them home.
That chicken soup looks fabulous. Thanks for this!
Great question and great article. Difficult coming up with an answer.
