Where did the rumor about Mel moving to Australia originate?
Sunday, the online version of The Daily Mail, a British tabloid ran a story with a headline that read, Troubled Mel 'leaving the States' after selling his New York mansion at cut price.
MyFoxNY.com followed with a similar report.
Quoting a “source close to the Gibson family,” the Daily Mail went on to report that Mel Gibson’s current problems with Oksana Grigorieva led to Mel reuniting with ex-wife Robyn Gibson, the mother of his 7 children. See Oksana Grigorieva’s $10 million Extortion Plot against Mel Gibson Backfires.
The story went on to report that the move to Australia was Robyn’s idea.
The “source” said that Mel told friends he was moving back to Australia with ex-wife Robyn Gibson, and that is was Robyn who persuaded Mel that “ he needs to get away from Hollywood and find peace on his ranch and she will go with him along with some of the children.’
Facts that Appeared to Support The Rumor
The fact that Mel Gibson was reported to have recently sold his Connecticut mansion and put his Malibu property up for sale, appeared to lend credence to the rumors that Mel was preparing to move to Australia.
It was reported by MyFoxNY.com and other sources that Mel sold his $39.5 million dollar mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut at the cut rate price of $24 million. And that Mel’s $15 million Malibu home, Lavender Hill Farm was also up for sale.
Mel’s Rep Says the Rumor Is NOT True.
According to an msnbc.com update, Mel Gibson’s spokesperson, Alan Nierob, says Mel has no plans to move to Australia.
Right now, Mel Gibson is in the middle of shooting an upcoming film.
Mel is also facing domestic violence charges, and is currently in the midst of a bitter current custody battle with Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his 9-month old child See . Oksana Grigorieva’s $10 million Extortion Plot against Mel Gibson Backfires
Based on this alone, it appear that Mel Gibson has no immediate plans to leave the United States.
Mel’s official spokesperson, Alan Nierob, confirms that for now, Mel Gibson is planning on staying put in the United States, and that the rumor that Mel is moving to Australia, which started with The Daily Mail, is UNTRUE.

I think media people jumped in and did not look at when the properties were listed on the market, which was quite some time ago. A story was developed to explain recent sales/listings without any historical review. Too bad that passes as journalism these days. I see better research on TMZ from their posters on the Mel/Oksana stories. Why is no one digging into her past--there is lots to find. Use google to translate and the going gets very interesting in the Russian papers.
