According to a December 26, 2013 Perez Hilton report, "Selena can’t stand Lorde, and has publicly trashed Lorde for not being feminist and supporting other female artists."
The source also suggested that Swift's motives for befriending the "Royals" singer were career-driven. "Taylor is buttering up Lorde, because she wants a musical collaboration and knows that Lorde is the hottest new thing in pop music. Taylor is blowing off the diss. She wants and edgier image, and Lorde is helping her craft that."
If that's the case, then it is understandable that Gomez would object to her best friend's new friendship. After all, Lorde has publicly made some unflattering remarks about Gomez' music, and has continued to stand by these comments.
Back in September, the then-16-year-old singer took aim at her single, "Come and Get It," suggesting that the song promoted an anti-feminist message by encouraging women to take passive roles in their relationships.
In October, Gomez responded to Lorde's comments by arguing that "it's not feminism if you're tearing down another artist."
It's a bit surprising that Swift would suddenly want to befriend Lorde. The New Zealand native has made questionable comments about the country star as well. Back in September, she suggested that Swift was "too flawless" and "too unattainable," and that her physical appearance represented an unhealthy, unrealistic ideal for young women.
However, Lorde later took to Tumblr to apologize to Swift and to explain that the comments had been taken out of context.
Given Swift's new friendship with Lorde, it appears that the "22" singer has decided to let bygones be bygones.
Is Lorde causing a rift between Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift? Should Swift continue to pursue a friendship with Lorde? Or is Gomez' beef with the "Royals" singer justified?
