Deadline reported yesterday that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in the running to play the lead role of Peter Quill in Marvel Studios upcoming "Guardians Of The Galaxy". Other contenders include Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, and Zachary Levi.
Comic book fans are ecstatic to hear that the "Guardians Of The Galaxy" comic franchise is generating so much interest from such actors. In the comics, Peter Quill is the leader of the interstellar space team, Guardians of the Galaxy, who's primary goal is to protect the universe from an evil alien race hellbent on enslaving the entire universe. In addition, fans are salivating over the prospect of a "Guardians Of The Galaxy"and "The Avengers" crossover. In the comics, the two teams work together to defeat galactic baddies. In fact, comic writer Brian Michael Bendis had announced that Iron Man will be joining Guardians Of The Galaxy in the upcoming series this February. Fans are hoping that this team-up will not be limited to just comic books.
Should JGL get the role of Peter Quill, it would be a major score for him as he played the role of Robin John Blake in Christopher Nolan’s "The Dark Knight Rises". If he does land the role of Peter Quill and there is a sequel or a movie based on the character of John Blake, then JGL would be playing major comic book characters for the two leading competing comic book companies - Marvel comics and DC comics. If so, JGL would beone of the few actors to headline in movies based on both Marvel and DC characters; Ryan Reynolds with "Green Lantern", "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", and "Blade: Trinity"; Halle Berry with the "X-Men" franchise and "Catwoman"; Natalie Portman with "Thor" and"V for Vendetta"; and James Marsden with "X-Men" franchise and "Superman Returns".
No doubt that fans will be watching closely on the latest development on this project from Marvel Studios.
