In my last article about the Newtown Massacre, Is it SAFE yet? An essay on the 2012 Newton CT Massacre 12/20/2012, I recommended many things to mitigate future attacks of this sort. However, one of my ideas involved installing 6 ton safe rooms in public buildings like Sandy Hook Elementary. What I did not take into consideration was that 6 tons is a bit much for a 2nd or 3rd story floor. And if we are talking about multiple ones then just do the math!
So I had to rethink this. Maybe the 6 ton version was OK for exterior environments where it's attached to the side of the building allowing ingress from the classroom but on multi-floored buildings a much lighter version of safe room is needed. Furthermore it must be strong enough to still stop small caliber arms fire and medium level explosives.
Well I was looking around and I found these types of all metal safe rooms which are much lighter in weight (see photos attached). As the previous article stated they can still be worked into any environment to blend in and not be an eye sore.
I believe the safety of our children and the general public from madmen (and women) is critical and something like this is needed. Help me support this idea by spreading this article around the Internet. Maybe we can get a grass roots approach to using ideas like this to save lives!
