Most people will tell a white lie and give excuses for doing so. This website gives 15 most common white lies and why they are told.
- “Everyone tells a white lie on occasion, it’s just a question of why. Some white lies save relationships, some ease a hectic situation, and others buy us time. The list could go on forever. Stretching the truth is a natural component of human instinct because it’s the easy way out.”
- “As long as we aren’t hurting others or breaking the law, these innocent lies can make life more pleasant. They can absorb potential friction between our varying personalities and vacillating moods as we nudge into one another on the quest through our daily routine. Most of these white lies only stretch an interpretation of what the truth actually is anyways. Given our rigid optimism to each lead a tailored ideal life, white lies simply cushion us from ourselves.”
Do these quotes sound familiar?
Even in our justice system as flawed as it is, (Casey Anthony case in point) if a person on the witness stand tells a lie and it is proved they did so, the judge will either fine them or send them to jail for committing perjury! Lie detector tests are given to see if a person is telling the truth or lying. Yet, many still think that it is okay to tell a lie whenever they believe that it is justified!
But, what does the Bible say about lying? The ninth Commandment says:
- "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16 NKJ)
- “I am the Alpha and the Omega, [the] Beginning and [the] End, the First and the Last." Blessed [are] those who do His commandments, [fn]that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city But [fn] outside [are] dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.” (Rev. 22:13-15)
It is obvious that God doesn’t consider even a “white lie” okay!
We are all familiar with the story of Rahab the harlot. Did God wink at the lie she told? It would seem so by reading in the book of Hebrews how God felt about her, wouldn’t it? Because she is mentioned as a faithful woman, many Christians believe that she was justified in lying to protect the spies of Israel. But was she?
- Hebrews 11:30-31: “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.”
Remember that we must put all of the scriptures together in order to come to the truth of an issue, and we don’t use an unclear scripture to come to a conclusion.
- II Timothy 2:15: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
We will continue with Rahab in our next installment and also take a look at the many examples in the scriptures of those who lied and what happened to them!
Be sure and tune in for the next installment and see what happened to Rahab!
