Twitter was abuzz on Monday with a report that Hank Aaron had died suddenly of a heart attack. But, according to an article published by AL.com on March 11, 2013, the latest celebrity death rumor is just another hoax. Hammerin' Hank is alive and well, thank you.
It all started Monday morning when Twitter user @_BravesCountry tweeted, "BREAKING: Braves Legend Hank Aaron has passed away from a heart attack after being rushed to the hospital. #RIPHammer."
The account claims to be a destination site for Atlanta Braves fans, and the hashtag quickly picked up steam. But, team officials swiftly responded, tweeting out a message of their own, saying, "#Braves fans, the rumors are not true. Hank Aaron is alive and well."
Celebrity death rumors and hoaxes are big sport on the web, but, so far, they've usually been reserved for movie and TV stars, musicians, or any celeb currently experiencing some sort of public meltdown.
Why a trickster would want to pick on Hank Aaron is debatable, but it does show the power the Internet wields when it comes to "breaking" news.
