Just when you thought that Mark Sanchez was ready to be named the starting quarterback for the New York Jets, Geno Smith makes his first statement of training camp. On Wednesday the rookie quarterback went reportedly 15/16 with two touchdowns in what was arguably one of his best practices of camp.
This is just what the doctor ordered for Smith who has a very good chance of starting against the New York Giants Saturday night at MetLife stadium. The next step for the first year signal caller will be to translate his practice performances to the field against a very good opponent in the Giants. If Geno can find a way to effectively maneuver the offense without making costly mistakes he could find himself as the starting quarterback in week of the regular season.
It is going to be very interesting to see how Rex Ryan and Marty Mornhinweg handle the reps and playcalling on Saturday night. If this is a true quarterback competition the coaching staff should open the playbook and let Geno Smith show what he can bring to the offense. If the rookie shines in the audition, he gets the lead role. If Smith falters, you can justify starting Mark Sanchez who has had a solid camp of his own.
