One of the knocks on Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s undefeated career is that he ducked the top fighters during their prime. One fighter that accused him of ducking was Miguel Cotto who challenged Floyd to a fight from 2008 on. Floyd finally accepted the challenge last week. However, now that the fight has been made between the two, there are many pundits who believe that Cotto is on his last legs as a fighter and that Floyd is getting him at the most opportune time. According to a Tuesday February 7th report by BoxingScene.com, former world champion Robert Guerrero is one of those who thinks that Floyd is being opportunistic in taking on Cotto pas his prime:
"I think it would have been a better fight when Cotto was in his prime. Cotto is a great champion, but Floyd is getting him at the right time."

I absolutely agree with Guerrero on this topic. The 31 year old Cotto has a lot of wear and tear on his body due to some of the wars he has been in during his illustrious career. As much as I would like to see Cotto pull off the upset, his skills are not on par with Floyd at this stage in their careers.
Over the last few years, Floyd has taken on a old Shane Mosley, an in experienced and outmatched Victor Ortiz, a smaller Marquez and now and past his prime Cotto. This causes many Floyd critics to claim that Mayweather is very opportunistic in taking on opponents at the most vulnerable times in their careers. Since Pacquiao vs. Mayweather won't come to fruition, I would prefer to see Mayweather step into a ring with Sergio Martinez.

Hopefully Cotto has enough left in the tank to pull out one of his classic warrior performances on May 5th in Las Vegas. He certainly has the power to end the fight with one punch. The problem is, many pundits feel that Miguel won't be fast enough to land that powerful punch on the quicker, defensive fighter in Floyd Mayweather Jr. For more on Robert's comments, click here.
