Following in the footsteps of "Final Fantasy VII," achievements for "Final Fantasy VIII" have appeared in the Steam database. Neogaf.com user ULTROS! (appropriately enough) posted on March 12 this link to what appears to be a list of "FF VIII" achievements, largely consisting of unlocking various Guardian Forces, the summons of the game.
Though around two years ago both "Final Fantasy VII" and "Final Fantasy VIII" appeared in Steam's registry, the files were merely placeholders, and were promptly removed shortly after their discovery. With the recent re-release of "Final Fantasy VII," however, and given Square-Enix's track record, it would not surprise if a re-release of "Final Fantasy VIII" was in the works.
"Final Fantasy VIII" has seen release on the Playstation (originally), PC, and most recently on the Playstation Network, making it available across the Playstation suite. While generally not as celebrated as its predecessor, the game still is still representative of a sort of golden age for Square-Enix, and introduced one of the series' flagship characters in the brooding, floppy-haired Squall Leonheart. For this gamer, the opening of "Final Fantasy VIII" still ranks as one of the best to date, and I get a slight urge to pop in the old PS1 disc as I type.
Though this is all just rumor and speculation at this point, and might hold just as much weight as the placeholders did two years ago, one can hope, and given Square's recent promise to return to their roots, titles reminding players of a better time, all the while working on new and "epic" content, might not be the worst decision.
