Before you reach for that bottle of antidepressants, have you considered lifestyle changes? Mild to moderate depression can be treated effectively with regular exercise. It causes your body to release endorphins, which lessen the perception of pain and elevate your mood.
In a 16 week study of depression medication and exercise, the groups that did only one or the other to treat their depression had effectively the same results. The only difference was that the exercise group’s results lasted longer.
While exercise alone can’t treat moderate to severe depression, it can bolster the effects of your medication. The added benefits are a healthier lifestyle, which can be a nice thing to have when you come out on the other side.
