Is Duck Dynasty popular out of respect or is ignorance entertaining?

The recent Duck Dynasty controversy over ‘Duck Commander’ Phil Robertson’s comments comparing homosexuality to bestiality and statement that African-American field hands sang as an expression of joy lays bare many things about our current political and social climate. One is the obvious and continued use of less sophisticated American evangelicals by the GOP for political gains.

Remember Ronald Reagan’s defeat of born again Christian Jimmy Carter? In terms of devotion to the Christian faith there was no comparison between the two. It was pure politics and Christians fell for it while Jerry Falwell and his ilk enriched their ministries and heightened their celebrity.

Duck Dynasty is popular the way Honey Boo Boo is popular; they are tragically ignorant, unsophisticated and hilarious. That’s all well and good for The Beverly Hillbillies, The Simpsons and Mister Magoo but this is ‘reality’ programming. The Duck Dynasty cast played their roles as ignorant unsophisticated self-described ‘Bible thumpers’ but don’t think for a minute they weren’t in on the joke: all the way to the bank.

When Sarah Palin spoke on Fox News about how Robertson quoted the ‘Gospel’ when he quoted Corinthians she knew better. For the record Sarah the Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But she is selling a brand to a political end not a faith or serious life ethic. To career politicians like Palin this ‘controversy’ is just one more in a long line of fundraising memes.

When the so-called Moral Majority was organized to tell born again Christians that no real Christian would vote for Jimmy Carter they were serving a higher purpose: political power. No need to ask what they would give in exchange for their souls it was clear and they were proud to sell out.

The Duck Dynasty clan may be brilliant business people and perform ignorance as a brand that will sell. Or they may just be ignorant. Only they know for sure.

But no intelligent honest person thinks African-Americans were happy in the mid-1900’s during Robertson’s formative years in the South. No intelligent honest person thinks the Earth was created in six days, that dinosaurs roamed the Earth with humans and that the Earth is only 6000 years old. Today’s fundamentalist Christians who worship the GOP over GOD are a bad witness. They hate when they feel like it and kill when they feel like it all the while promoting the Love and Pro-Life brands.

What Robertson said was ignorant, mean-spirited and hateful and if he doesn’t know better then he is an idiot and a bad witness to Christ's teaching. Yes we love to watch Duck Dynasty. Not out of respect but because ignorant people are funny.
