As you can see, Costco honors just a half-dozen holidays a year. It does not honor Presidents Day or MLK Day, but it does honor July 4. Most other stores will be open on July 4, including Target, Walmart, BJ's, Macy's, Best Buy, and most supermarkets.
Costco has long had a reputation for paying its employees well, No doubt giving employees more holidays off like July 4 helps them maintain and retain happy employees. While Costco shoppers may be a little frustrated today, there are plenty of other options for shoppers.
The San Francisco Costco store is just a couple of blocks from the Foodsco store, which is on Folsom and 14th Streets. That Foodsco sells some foods and other items in bulk similar to Costco. The stores prices are comparable to Costco for many items and the store is open holidays and every day until 1 a.m. Foodsco also has a much greater variety than Costco and you don't have to buy food and other items in bulk, but again, many bulk items are available if you choose.
The Target store is also nearby. It is located on Mission and 4th streets in the old Metreon complex. The store opens most holidays including July 4. Target also has some larger bulk items like Costco. Its prices are also comparable. Food prices at both Target and Foodsco are lower than Safeway and comparable to Costco, and Target, like Foodsco offers food and other items in smaller quantities.
Safeway stores are also open today on July 4. You can buy almost anything you would buy at Costco in Safeway. But Safeway's prices are generally higher than Costco, Foodsco, and Target. The expansive Safeway on Potrero and 16th streets is close to Costco and is one of the biggest Safeways in the country. Parking is also free and easy at the store.
The San Francisco Costco store is generally very busy in the afternoon and especially popular just after working hours, but if you want to avoid long lines shop early in the day or during the last hour the store is open, between 7:30 and 8:30 pm., generally the store is less crowded then, but if you appreciate those Costco samples, you will have to shop earlier in the day as the people who distribute samples generally stop working early in the day.
Many Costco shoppers are angry that the store decides to close on some holidays including July 4, with undoubtedly Costco employees are enjoying the time off. What do you think of Costco bucking the trend and closing on July 4 and several other holidays? Leave you comments below.
