I didn't hear much in Obama's State of the Union message to encourage those hoping for comprehensive immigration reform in 2010. In fact, Obama devoted only these 38 words to immigration:
"… And we should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system to secure our borders and enforce our laws and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation."
The administration, bruised and battered from the ongoing health care reform battle, may have concluded that CIR is best left to a non-election year. This view is reinforced by a recent statement from John McCain that immigration reform is a "no-go".
And those looking for leadership from Sarah Palin were disappointed by her simplistic sound bites on the subject on the Glenn Beck Show, but at least she had more to say than the President.
Replying to a lead in from Beck on Ellis Island, Palin said, "Let me address legal immigration and we need to continue to be so welcoming and inviting of those who are represented there by our Statue of Liberty. The immigrants, of course, built this country. And I think Republicans, conservatives are at fault when we allow the other side to capture this immigration issue and try to turn this issue into something negative for Republicans. I think we need to recognize that again, immigrants built this great country. There are rules to follow if you want to be a part of this great country. Let's make sure people are following the rules. But let's welcome this."
Regardless when the debate heats up in the Senate, a version of the bill, perhaps one close to the House version (HR 4321) will eventually become law. I don't believe the Republicans can permanently stall or block CIR, despite a likely attempt by the Party of No to threaten yet another filibuster.
But will the President's verbal commitment to bipartisanship signal a serious effort by both parties to get this done this year?

Immigration in America always meant the legal immigration. Illegal immigration is an oxymoron, the correct word is "crime".
Fixing the disfunctional legal immigration system is a matter of national security and that should be done yesterday. Republicans agree with that as well.
But the all or nothing approach of the democrats is a political game to keep the legal immigration reform on the hook, unless amnesty to illegal immigrants are also granted.
Appart from the fact it will never pass, this creates a disincentive for legal immigration. It also identifies both law abiding proper immigrants and law-breakers as "immigrants" and creates a common social apathy towards both, although there's a heaven to earth difference between hardworking law abiding people and criminals jumping over the fence.

This is more than "legal vs. illegal." All illegal aliens are criminals, plain and simple, and need to be swept up and pushed out of the U.S. with workplace enforcement, mandatory E-Verify, the SAVE Act in Congress, and American citizens turning in employers and others who aid and abet illegals.
But, don't get trapped in the "all LEGAL immigration is just fine" idea. While American unemplyment is over 10 percent, our Feds still issue over 300,000 green cards a month! And those people either compete for a job or go on welfare. Remember, that's every MONTH! F-1 student visas and H1-B worker visas are constantly overstayed and abused...with the Feds themselves recently reporting that over 20 percent of H1-B visas involve FRAUD!!! Yet we let them keep coming and coming...

Larry Brown, E-verify won't make much of a difference if it is made mandatory. It's only one tool in a weak arsenal against the illegal alien invasion. The problem with E-verify is...the U.S. Chamber of Commerce denuded it to where it only applies to new hires...There are 8 million-plus illegals working above board (paying taxes) and millions more working under the table--those "day laborers" you see on street corners and in shopping mall parking lots. The only way to make E-verify a powerful tool is to make it MANDATORY AND FOR CURRENT HIRES AS WELL AS NEW ONES! Doing so would cause many of the 8 million to return to Mexico or try to work under the table and some those jobs are becoming scarce due to the economy.

5) Kids that are illegal and went to American schools now could give back to the society, so that the money that wee spent on their education won't be thrown away.
6)The government will know about these 12 mil and more people so that Americans can feel safe, and stop complaining about criminals that they can't trase.

We don't need to roundup all illegal aliens in order to rid our country of them. If we pass tough laws and ENFORCE them, we could cut illegal aliens off from jobs by making it impossible for them to get hired. This could be done by making the E-verify system mandatory for all employers to use. We also need to make the penalties for employers knowingly hiring an illegal alien so severe that few employers would even consider doing it. We need to make it impossible for illegal aliens to be able to sign up for any social service program by making the E-verify program mandatory for verifying all applicants.
If we implement these laws, millions of illegal aliens would self-deport. The rest would be rounded up by police as they violate other laws. We also need to secure our borders!

Like the person before you said, they will not deport 12 million people. Thre is no way. They also won't do the e-verify, because they need cheap labor. If they did that then a lot of businesses would die because they wouldn't be able to afford to hire people... Therefore, these people are stuck. This was simply the best thing said on here, as a immigrant student, I fit in POINT 5, I graduated from my high school with HONORS, top 20% percent of class, Hall of Fame with SAT and ACT scores. Thanks to God, I was outstanding, I took AP classes ( collegel level while in high school) on US History, I know more about US History / Politics / Economy than majority of the population, Immigrants like I could be an asset to the American society, it would be a major WISDOM boom to our colleges, and would definately make the US the #1 country in education again.

If you deport illegal immigrants, you have to pay for it. How to pay it? Even though I know it, but you will agree only when you see it. The answer is the price increase all over. You have to pay $20 for ham burger. There is nobody hiring a person any more. Business is struggling getting business alive. The economy becomes toilet. No one may want to live here in US any more. The American wants to work in China or Japan. Thoses guys will have hard time as Amercan immigrant has now.

I am quite poor and when i was working I worked alot of bad jobs. I don`t blame the Mexican people for my luck, I blame the biased employers that thought I was too old or too blonde. I am somewhat glad I am poor. Then I can identify with everyone. then maybe I can care for people. We can`t always blame our misfortunes on someone else. I am so glad I grew up with all kinds and made nice friends. I am still glad to live in a metropolitan area. We all belong.
My husband is an illegal immigrant and I am a USC. He has filed taxes all 7 yrs he has been here. No criminal record just civil (broke civil law came here without inspection) We have 2 daughters and pay a mortgage. It is extremely difficult to get him legal thru the current immigration laws. They really need to be reformed at least for the USC's who have illegal immigrant spouse's. Re-enact 245i LIFE law
