Is Baltimore a New Gaming Mecca?

A screenshbot of Civilization IV: A popular PC game

Many may not realize that Baltimore is home to a growing gaming industry. Recently a conference on gaming was held at UMBC where Sid Meier gave a speech. Not only are several companies located around the Baltimore area but there are now gaming groups springing up as well. There are even conventions, game fests and shows being in the area. Baltimore is already home to a thriving artist community and many technology companies are located throughout the metro DC—Baltimore area. The availability of a large pool of students at local universities further helps the area with a good talent pool for developers.

A website called the “Baltimore Gamer” is now online for the latest news and information on the gaming industry in Baltimore. There are links to current events, blog posts, videos, and a forum. It is a definite online mecca for all things gaming in Baltimore. One great section of the site is a calendar of upcoming events including conferences and conventions. A job listing page is also available for local gaming studios and developers.

Some of the more well-known gaming companies located in the Baltimore region include Digital Streamworks, Zynga, Bethesda Softworks, Firaxis Games, Breakaway Games, and Big Huge Games. Many of these companies have positions open for gaming developers and testers. Be sure to check out their websites for more information.

It should be interesting to see how well the gaming industry grows in the Baltimore area.
