"American Horror Story" has been one of FX's grand surprises in recent years happily standing tall to shows such as "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia", "Sons Of Anarchy", "Anger Mangement", "Wilfred" and "Louie". Capturing a record 17 Emmy nominations including those for actress Jessica Lange and series creator Ryan Murphy, "American Horror Story: Asylum" is easily one of the more captivating series on cable television. Proving that these Emmy nominations aren't a fluke, the show has accumulated fifty-three nominations that include the Satellite Award, Television Critics Association Awards, PGA Award, Golden Reel Award, Golden Globe, Directors Guild of America Award, Bram Stoker Award, BMI Cable Award, ASC Award, Saturn Award and many, many more.
Featuring a strong, appealing nominated cast that features Oscar and Emmy Award winner Jessica Lange ("Tootsie", "Blue Sky"), Lilly Rabe, Evan Peters, Dylan McDermott ("Olympus Has Fallen","The Practice") Zachary Quinto ("Star Trek", "Margin Call"), Sarah Paulson ("Down With Love"), Frances Conroy, Joseph Fiennes ("Shakespeare In Love"), Denis O'Hare ("The Departed"), Connie Britton ("Nashville", "Spin City"), Chloe Sevengy ("Boys Don't Cry", "American Psycho") and James Cromwell ("Babe", "L.A.Confidential") amongst the many that have appeared, Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have stated from the beginning of the project that each season would feature a new story and cast as the anthology series centers on different characters and locations that include a haunted house ("American Horror Story" Season 1), an insane asylum ("American Horror Story: Asylum" Season 2) and finally, a witch coven.
While the "Main Title" Design Category for the Emmys has been endangered in the past due to lack of overall titles these days on TV, it is now back with a vengeance given the influx of new multi-platform shows that don't have to worry as much about episode timing. One of the reasons shows have been so memorable over the years is because of their memorable openings many of which still reasonate with people that include the likes of "The Simpsons", "The Cosby Show", "The A-Team", "Law & Order", "M*A*S*H", "The Wire", "Sex & The City", "Family Ties", "Cheers", "Moonlighting", "Taxi" and thousands more. It was one of the reasons why I wanted and made me want to watch them more and more because they were well produced openings and always had something special and original about them that stuck with you long after the show was off the air. From the visuals to the music, "American Horror Story" features as great and memorable an opening as any show has in the last decade.
Having been nominated two years in a row for "American Horror Story" and "American Horror Story: Asylum," series creator Ryan Murphy has teamed up with Kyle Cooper and Kate Berry of Prologue studios, some of the best film & TV title-producers in the business to produce another skin-crawling sophomore masterpiece. For this particular title, the group elicited the intended emotions of fear, fright and agitation as they applied innovative techniques of light, music, film degradation and overexposure. Specific symbols from the show were chosen (many meant to foreshadow plots in the series) and a careful balance of music was strategized to complete the piece.
The Rennie Mackintosh typography and original score by composers Cesar Davila Irizarry and Charlie Clouser were preserved, while the visuals were filmed over two days on the American Horror Story set to match the insane asylum theme of Season 2. Disturbed mental patients and troubling scenes flash across the screen as Cooper gives us a peek inside the mysterious terror within the walls of the Asylum.
The "American Horror Story: Asylum Main Title" has received an immense response from fans world-wide, who have claimed on social networks that they are still hooked on the sequence. It is currently nominated for an Emmy Award, to be announced at the Nokia Theater on September 15th in Los Angeles. The Emmy Awards will take place on September 22nd and airing at 8 PM on CBS (barring Time Warner's dispute for those customers).
As an added bonus, there will be a future contest held where fans of the series will actually be able to win a chance to appear in the next main title…Details will be forthcoming.
A weekend marathon featuring all 13 episodes of "American Horror Story: Asylum" will air on FX starting Friday night 8/23 for Episodes 1-7 starting at 10 pm – 5 am, and then again for Episodes 8-13 on Saturday, 8/24 at 11pm – 5 am. Check your local cable or satelite for listings.
