With the holiday seasons fast approaching and technology never stopping one comes to the realization Christmas and Black Friday are soon around the corner. So let's take a look at one of the biggest technological advancements this year. The fad of 3DTV's is hitting an all time high and in this article we will take a look at if the new wave of HD 3D TV's is right for you.
First the thing we have to think about is does one need to really have a 3D TV? The answer to that is purely subjective based on if you want to latest and greatest in new technology. I however tend to lean towards NO I don't need an HD 3D TV simply because there really is no use for it. Other technologies have yet to reach the same levels as the 3D TV. Blu-Ray's are getting there but then again there aren't many 3D movies out there and not to many cable companies are broadcasting in 3D to make a purchase worthwhile.
The equipment that is required seems to be a bit bulky however they are leaps and bounds above the blue and red glasses from the days of yore that your parents probably wore at the drive-ins. The glasses act as a secondary screen that sync’s up with the TV’s refresh rate to make the picture come out and be life like. I got a chance to test drive a few 3D TV’s while shopping around and they had the demo 3D disc playing and I must admit some of the images did appear to be 3D. The fish seems to swim away from the TV but disappeared when they went out of frame. So yes in essence it gave you the feeling of 3D and it was more believable.
The other video that was playing was a soccer game and a slow motion soccer kick directed at the screen and I will also have to admit I did dodge my head out the way, it was very life like. However there were other videos that just didn’t seem to pop out like they should. They made other images appear to have depth but not so much to make you want to wave your hand in front of the TV to try and grab it.
Going back to the glasses you must wear to view the 3D images they tend to get in the way. I wear glasses and wearing a second pair of glasses over top of them seems redundant. Perhaps a clip over version for glasses would be better that way your head isn’t bogged down with two sets of glasses. The glasses themselves do have visual appeal and don’t look very plasticy.
The one downside is that if your friends don’t have extra sets of glasses then the screen is useless to them. The double image makes you a bit nauseous and gave me a headache. But who would buy 8 pairs of glasses for you and your friends to watch the Eagles football game on game night? It would seem impractical and unneeded.
Overall the 3D TV technology has grown fast in the days since 3D movies first came around but the surrounding technology has yet to catch up with it. Until then it doesn’t make any sense unless you like to flaunt the fact you have the latest and greatest thing on the market. I would suggest that you wait a bit till the other technology catches up with the 3D TV before you go in and purchase one. Besides fi you wait a few more years the price on the 3D TV will drop considerably and make it more affordable.
