Wednesday, taxpayers expecting refunds are waiting longer than usual and while the IRS’ Where’s My Refund tool has worked sporadically, the IRS states that it has nothing to do with when the refunds are processed. The news has created an Internet buzz as people attempt to find out how long their refund will take.
Electronic returns have typically taken 1-2 weeks in the past, but H&R Block reports that this year refunds are taking 10-21 days, and this has many taxpayers angry and frustrated. And while the IRS’ Where’s My Refund tool shows that they haven’t even received the returns for some taxpayers, the IRS states that they are being processed.
The IRS states that new safeguards that were installed on their computers to prevent fraud have slowed down the system and they are aware of it and are working on it.
Last week the IRS posted this message on their website:
Update: We are aware that some taxpayers who have filed electronically and received an acknowledgement from the IRS are concerned when they visit “Where’s My Refund” and are told that we have no information regarding their return. This is a temporary situation, and we expect to resolve the matter in a few days. At that time, taxpayers will be able to get an expected refund date when they visit “Where’s My Refund.”
