IRS Chief Lois Lerner: To Jail or Not to Jail

This coming Thursday on April 10, 2014, the House Oversight Committee scheduled a “contempt of Congress” vote for former IRS bureaucrat Lois Lerner.

Lerner was the Director of the IRS' Exempt Organizations office who knowingly and willingly prevented conservative and Christian groups from participating in the 2012 election cycle. Read more about Lois Lerner’s involvement in the IRS targeting of conservative Christian groups here.

This vote in the Oversight Committee is going to be very, very close. The entire investigation into the IRS targeting scandal hinges on this one vote.

Eric Holder's Justice Department refuses to investigate the crimes of the IRS agents involved.

Obama says that there was "not a smidgen of corruption" involved in the systematic targeting of Christian groups.

The current acting head of the IRS says it will take "at least a year" before they can find Lois Lerner's emails, which have been subpoenaed by Congress.

But, nothing will happen in this investigation if Americans do not take action. The buck and the truth stops with Lois Lerner. If she cannot be compelled to testify, this entire scandal will be swept under the rug.

According to well-documented reports from conservative news outlets, the FBI has not interviewed even one of the Christian and Tea Party groups that had their tax-exempt status held up by Lois Lerner's office.

If Lois Lerner is held in contempt of Congress, she can be held in jail until she agrees to testify about what she knows.

This contempt of Congress tactic has worked almost every single time that it has been used in the past.

What normally happens is that when Congress threatens to hold a contempt vote, the person in question finds a way to comply to avoid a jail term.

The threat of a contempt of Congress worked to compel Harriet Myers to testify about the firings of US Attorneys in 2008 when the Democrats controlled the House.

The threat worked in 1998 when Republicans used it against Janet Reno. She turned over the documents that were used in Bill Clinton's impeachment before the vote needed to happen.

If a contempt of Congress threat worked against Harriet Myers and against Janet Reno, it will work against Lois Lerner. Find out how you can help convince Congress to hold Lois Lerner in contempt here.

Lois Lerner is holding out from testifying because she believes that Obama and Eric Holder will protect her.

What Lois Lerner and the IRS did amounts to theft - theft of an entire election as well as a violation of the first amendment right to petition government.

The Christian groups that were targeted by Lerner were prevented from raising money. In addition, Lerner carried out this entire operation in order to steal the 2012 elections.

After 11 months of stonewalling, Americans are finally close to learning the truth.

What did Lois Lerner know and when did she know it? Who gave her the order to target Christian groups for political extermination? Did her orders come straight from the top -- from Obama?

We know that Lerner is guilty because of the IRS whistle-blowers who leaked some of her emails to the Oversight Committee. However, we will never know the whole truth if Congress cannot be convinced to hold her in contempt.

If you believe that justice should be served for breaking the law regardless of status you can help by urging Congress to compel Lois Lerner to testify by holding her in contempt of Congress here. Please also share this link with everyone you know so that they can help too.
