Irish opponent review: Bowl games

The college football season has finally ended and nine Notre Dame opponents played in bowl games. Here is a look at how they fared in the postseason.

Navy proved to be no match for Arizona State as the Sun Devils blasted the Midshipmen 62-28 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Arizona State racked up 648 yards of total offense in the win. Gee Gee Greene led Navy with 112 yards rushing. The Midshipmen finish the season 8-5.

Oklahoma State rolled Purdue 58-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The Boilermakers fell behind 45-0 before finally scoring with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. Robert Marve threw for 212 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. Purdue finishes the season 6-7.

Michigan State rallied for 17 second half points to come back and beat TCU 17-16 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. Le'Veon Bell wrapped up his Spartan career by leading MSU with 145 yards rushing and a touchdown. The Spartans end their season 7-6 overall.

South Carolina scored with 11 seconds left to come back and beat Michigan 33-28 in the Outback Bowl. Michigan had trailed by 11 points on two separate occasions before coming back to take the lead with 3:29 remaining. Devin Gardner threw for 214 yards with three touchdowns and an interception in the loss for the Wolverines who wrap up their season 8-5.

Stanford captured their first Rose Bowl championship since 1972 with a 20-14 victory over Wisconsin. Stepfan Taylor rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown to lead the Cardinal to a 12-2 final record.

BYU dominated San Diego State in their 23-6 victory in the Poinsettia Bowl. The Cougars forced five Aztec turnovers. Kyle Van Noy returned both a fumble and an interception for a touchdown to lead BYU. The Cougars end their season at 8-5.

Oklahoma ran into a buzzsaw in Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M as the Aggies destroyed the Sooners 41-13 in the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners had no answer for Manziel who threw for 287 yards and rushed for 229. Oklahoma was led by Landry Jones who passed for 278 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the Sooners end the season 10-3 overall.

Ole Miss roughed up Pittsburgh 38-17 in the BBVA Compass Bowl. Tino Sunseri threw for 185 yards with two touchdowns and a pick for the Panthers who finish their season 6-7 overall.

USC played listless in their 21-7 loss to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl. The Trojans only touchdown came on a Silas Redd reception in the second quarter. Redd finished with 88 yards rushing and three catches for 14 yards and the score to lead USC who finish their disappointing season 7-6.

For the bowl season, Notre Dame opponents went 3-6. For the season, Irish opponents went 86-68 including Navy's 17-13 victory over Army. Adding Alabama into the mix, Irish opponents went 99-69 this season.
