Iris DeMent's large family moved from Paragould, Arkansas to the Los Angeles area when DeMent was very young. DeMent grew up with an affinity for music and began writing her own songs at the age of 25. DeMent's debut album, Infamous Angel, did not crack the charts, but did produce songs that were used on television and on the big screen.
Iris DeMent's 1994 sophomore effort My Life became her coming out party. The album peaked at #16 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. DeMent's mix of country and folk music has continued to grow in popularity over the years, culminating in her October 2012 release Sing the Delta (her first album in eight years and fifth overall) climbing the Billboard 200 for the first time. You can check out the title track to the album in the nearby video box.
