“…I know Ireland not as a single place, but as a mosaic of places, each one steeped in history and myth, song and poetry.” -Patricia Monaghan, from her book, The Red-haired Girl from the Bog
If dreary March skies have you dreaming of escaping to a land of natural and cultural wonders, read on— and mark your calendar.
This September, author/teacher Patricia Monaghan and physician/social activist Michael McDermott will lead an “Insider’s Tour of Ireland,” a week filled with not just sightseeing, but poetry, myth and music. The program offers participants, “a chance to explore one of Ireland’s most scenic regions and to meet leaders in the arts and culture of this fascinating country.”
Destinations include Coole Park, the historic home of Lady Augusta Gregory; Brigit’s Garden, a public park that celebrates ancient Celtic heritage and traditional seasonal festivals; Aughnanure, a castle once held by the pirate queen Grace O’Malley; a visit to a stone circle on the autumnal equinox; and the highlight of the trip, Clifden Arts Week, an internationally renowned festival that features the best of traditional and modern culture from Ireland and beyond, set in the small fishing town of Clifden, Co. Galway.
The tour group will be joined by a variety of folklorists and historians whose expertise will help to deepen the experience of each location.
