Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning; family attempts to halt it through other governments

Sakineh Mohamamadi Ashtiani, an Iranian woman is sentenced to be stoned to death at any time, and a human rights group and her family are trying to stop it from happening. She was convicted in 2006 of committing adultery with two men, and upon appeal the decision was upheld in 2007. Fox News reported that the two men were involved in killing her husband.

According to Ashtiani, 42, she received 99 lashes and was forced to confess, and afterwards attempted to retract that confession. She has been in jail since 2005, and has denied the adultery. She has two children, Fasride, 16, and Sajjad, 20, who have been trying to get her released with the help of human rights groups.

Death by stoning takes place with the convicted buried up to the chest, and stones are thrown at the head. The stones are large enough to cause immediate pain, but not too large kill right away, according to Amnesty International.

According to Ashtiani's lawyer her execution is imminent, reported Fox News.

Amnesty International tracks death penalty cases that happen around the world, and they said that 126 people have been executed in Iran so far this year through June 6, according to CNN.
