Apple announced a thinner and lighter version of iPod touch, however it is sturdier in the look and more powerful in functions than its previous generations.

Apple has sold 275 million iPods, so on average every 20th person on the globe owns this popular gadget. The iPod touch improved considerably from its humble beginning in September, 2007.

The current iPod touch is available in three flavours with the only difference being the storage size. The base model (8GB) goes for $249, while the 32GB and 64GB versions are offered by Apple at $319 and $429 respectively. The new base model is nearly $50 more expensive than the previous 3rd generation, however, some of the new features make it worth considering.

Some of the new capabilities of the 4th generation iPod touch running on the iOS 4.1 are:

  • FaceTime: One of the most awaited features added in the new iPod is the FaceTime. It gives the video calling capability to iPod touch, meaning good news to the Skype, Yahoo, MSN, and Google video chat fans. Hence, you can see your friends and talk to them, which was not possible in previous generations of iPod touch. The device will come with two cameras, front and rear. The cam offers 720p HD video recording (at 30 FPS) and still photos (at 960 x 720).
  • Built-in microphone: No more earbuds needed as Apple listened to its million users and added built-in microphone capability to the 4th generation iPod Touch.
  • Retina display: Improvement in the Retina display with its 960-by-640 resolution on iPod touch makes everything you see and do on it look even more incredible.
  • HD video recording: This feature of the new iPod touch will be an instant hit. Now you can record, edit, and share stunning HD video right in your palms.
  • Game center: With the introduction of the new A4 processor (the same as on iPhone 4), one can enjoy more amazing gaming.

With the announcement of the new 4th generation iPod touch, the gap between iPhone and iPod touch narrowed further. Except the GPS and the calling feature, the majority of the features are identical on both of these devices.

Apple still needs to listen to their users and build in an SD or Micro SD slot so that files saved to the SD can be immediately transferred to a PC without the need of iTunes or specific software... Also could use flash support and support for formats such as AVI, etc... Other than that, theses are some GREAT improvements!!!

What an awesome feature set!!! However I unfortunately just bought a 32GB 3rd generation iPod Touch less than two weeks ago and I am not ready to drop another three bills just yet. Curse you apple for making such a must-have product!!!

Check the mac buyer's guide on macrumors.com periodically to check for future updates of apple products. Then you won't buy an old version just before it gets updated.

I use my mifi verizion card that gives me wifi every where I go then use mobile me to off load or load any data. I know it's not perfect but it helps manage how much data is being stored.

Hello... *Knock* *Knock* Apple... Are you guys even paying attention to your consumers? We want more memory! 64gb is cool and all, but what happened to your strict following of Moores Law. Amp up the storage or I'll be looking at an Android to pickup where you guys left off. It might just be the time to start pulling from the Cloud.
