One of the neat iPhone 3GS features is the ability to control the device using iPhone voice commands. You can use these voice commands for playing a specific song or artist, to call a contact or even to call any number you want.
To activate Voice Control, simply hold down the iPhone Home button for a few seconds until the display changes to the Voice Control screen. At that point, you are ready to start giving commands.
Playing Music Using iPhone Voice Commands
The iPhone voice commands work by giving a keyword directive like "play" followed by what you want the iPhone to do, such as naming the playlist or artist you want it to play. Here are a list of different commands you can use:
Play [playlist] - Play a specific playlist. Example: "Play Pure Instrumentals".
Play [album] - Play songs from an album. Example: "Play White Album"
Play [artist] - Play songs from a specific artist. Example: "Play Beatles"
Shuffle - Start shuffling the songs.
Genius - Create a Genius list of what is playing. You can also use the iPhone voice commands "play more like this" or "play more songs like this".
What's Playing - Find out what song is playing. You can also use "what song is this" or
"who sings this song".
Pause music - Pause the iPod.
Next song - Skip to the next song.
Previous song - Go to the previous song.
Controlling Phone With iPhone Voice Commands
Call [contact] - Call the contact. If you have multiple numbers, the iPhone will ask you which to use such as Home or Mobile. Simply say "home", "mobile" or whichever phone line to use.
Call [contact] [home/mobile/etc] - Instead of waiting for the iPhone to ask you which number to call when a contact has multiple numbers, you can tack it onto the command such as saying "call mom home".
Call [number] - To place a call to someone not in your contact list, simply say "Call" followed by the number.
Dial [contact/number] - Instead of using "Call" as the keyword, you can use "Dial" instead.
