iPhone to T-Mobile not Verizon the logical move for Apple

Over the last few months, there has been an anticipation over which wireless carriers would gain the iPhone once AT&T’s exclusivity contract with Apple ended.  With the contract nearing its end, several companies have been jockeying for position to gain the device.  While it seemed for a long time that Verizon and Sprint would be the front-runners to gain it, it seems that T-Mobile has emerged as the most likely next carrier of the iPhone.

According to a new Fortune report, Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu believes that the best and easiest course of action for Apple to take when choosing the first new carrier for the iPhone will be T-Mobile.  Wu’s speculation is based on the fact that T-Mobile runs a GSM network much like the one AT&T runs, just at a different frequency.  Both the iPhone 3GS and the upcoming iPhone 4 are both able to support this new frequency, which is 2100 MHz.

This allows Apple to not make any alterations to their iPhone, yet still bring it to a new carrier.  If they wished to bring it to Verizon or Sprint, they would have to build a new iPhone from scratch that could handle their type of network.  Logically, it seems like T-Mobile might be the way to go for Apple.  That being said, I wouldn’t rule out a Verizon iPhone in the future, I think it’s necessary to put down the Droid once and for all.

What do you mean by "put down the Droid once and for all?" Not an Android fan are we?

A CDMA version (Verizon/Sprint compatible) is already in development and has been for some time. While I think your analysis regarding T-Mobile is likely correct, I believe the iPhone on Verizon may come sooner rather than later.

The Droid X will have a better camera, Flash 10.1, and just an overall better OS. Even the Evo and Galaxy S are already on par or even better than the iPhone 4.
