The quality of display of the latest smartphones reaching the market is touching new horizons day-by-day. The pixel density, dots per inch (DPI) and the color depth are main attributes that are advanced in order to better the display of any digital device. In this battle of obtaining the best image quality, smartphones which truly stands above the rest are Apple iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III. A few people are still confused whether the iPhone 5’s Retina display with its unmatchable pixel density is better than the Samsung Galaxy's brilliant Super Amoled display or not. Firstly, let's see what Retina Display and Super Amoled Display actually mean. Amoled is based on organic compounds which illuminate on contact with electricity. It consists of an organic layer exactly above a TFT which helps in generating different colors by injecting electricity into the organic layer.
Retina display, on the other side, is based upon traditional LCD TFT with IPS technology. As the pixel size is reduced, more pixels can be displayed per square inch.
When it comes to retina display, it has the highest pixilation available on a smartphone of 326 ppi. Since the human eye has a threshold of 300 ppi, the images displayed on the device look real. On the other hand, Super AMOLED Plus integrates a capacitive touchscreen layer directly to the display, instead of overlaying it on the top of the display. The resultant is a stunning display which is hard to beat having pixilation up to 217 ppi.
A Samsung phone has strong color saturation and a sharp definition which can beat the smooth pixel curvature of Apple. The clarity and consistency of viewing an image on a LCD screen wins over an Amoled screen but the power consumption in an LCD screen is more as compared to an Amoled screen.
Super Amoled display provides a better contrast, high accuracy and colors in a more vibrant manner. It also provides better viewing angles than those provided by Apple's IPS technology. But it has less reflection power than retina display when it comes to sunlight.
Looking at the various display technologies available today such as OLET, SED, QD-LED, FLD etc, a great revolution is expected to come in the next few years. But as far as Super Amoled and Retina displays are concerned, Amoled could be termed as one of the best new technologies and Retina would be described as the best improvement over an existing technology.
