iPhone explodes mid-flight giving off 'plumes of dense smoke'

An iPhone exploded on a plane midflight over Australia, emitting smoke into the plane’s cabin. The iPhone not only exploded, but gave off plumes of “dense smoke” and it was glowing red, as in red hot. While the iPhone is known for issues with its battery, this was something different, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

A flight attendant quickly took control of the situation and was able to extinguish the phone, following the in-flight procedures for an incident such as this one. The passengers and crew were unharmed during the incident.

This exploding iPhone is not the first time an Apple product has gone up in smoke. In 2009 the European Union investigated reports of mobile devices catching fire and more recently it was the original Nano music player from Apple that was recalled due to risks of the product overheating. Apple has not commented as of yet on the exploding iPhone incident down under.
