The iPhone 5S is the next big thing from Apple, even if there doesn't appear to be many changes beyond the finger print scanner. Officially unveiled yesterday, there are even some who doubt whether or not the new processor will actually be that much faster than what users see if they just have the regular old iPhone 5.
Largely lost in the all the excitement over the new Apple smartphones was that the original iPhone 5 will no longer be supported by Apple. This has to be a bit of a surprise to those of us who bought what was the newest model just last September. Apple did say at the Tuesday press conference that the 4S version of the phone will live on as the cheaper version people can probably get for free in a few months if they re-up their contract.
So what do you do if you don't really want a phone that suddenly had the legs kicked out from under it by the company who was very recently charging an arm and a leg to own? There's always the Apple buyback program. While Apple may not be in love with the year old model, they still know there are plenty of other people who are willing to pay a pretty penny for the handset.
If you go to the Apple website and start plugging in what kind of phone you have and what kind of condition it is in at the present time, you will soon find that the iPhone 5 is worth anywhere from $260 to $310. That pricing is contingent on making sure that your phone is still in good condition, hasn't been engraved and you still have all the accessories for the handset.
If you are thinking that you want to jump ship and grab the newest iteration of Apple's smartphone but you are a ways away from renewing your contract for a discount through your carrier, this could be the way to go. One caveat is that if you do trade in your phone to an Apple store or online you will only get an Apple gift certificate. This means that you won't be able to jump over to Android with a hefty check from Tim Cook.
The other caveat is that the trade-in value might not stay quite this high for very long. Once the iPhone 5S and 5C have saturated the market, there won't be nearly as large a demand for the older models.
