Anyone with an iPad knows that iPhone apps don’t exactly look great on the device. The apps appear either small or cloudy on the iPad’s much higher resolution screen. Fortunately, the upcoming iPhone 4 has something different to say about that. Any iPhone 4 app will almost fill the iPad’s screen and not be distorted at all. This could lead the way for iPhone 4 apps to work well on the iPad, and iPad apps to work well on the iPhone 4.
According to AppleInsider, iPhones and iPads will have a nearly identical display between the two devices. The iPhone 4’s display will be 1024x768 pixels, while the iPhone 4’s resolution will be 960x640 pixels. While there are more pixels on the iPad screen, there is a larger amount of pixels per square inch on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 will also be powered by the same A4 super chip that is the CPU of the iPad, making the engine and capabilities of each device similar.
This could be an indication of things to come in both the iPhone and iPad’s app department from now on. If these devices share the same CPU, and a similar resolution, making universal apps for the iPhone 4 and iPad should be a cinch. The impact of total universal apps in the future between Apple’s iPhones and iPads could be a huge advantage as the Droid looks to get into the tablet game in the coming months.
