UPDATE The iPhone 3.0 has been released but there are a few reports of those having iPhone 3.0 problems with the update. The most common problem seems to be an error message stating, "the iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable."
This error signifies that too many people are downloading the updates at the same time, causing a strain on the server. If this is the error you are receiving, you might find that waiting is the best method for getting your update completed.
There have been reports of some AT&T users encountering errors, as well as bricking. Also, one user reported a problem with iTunes and Internet Explorer and explains a fix here: iPhone 3.0 Upgrade Deactivating some AT&T Phones
Also, make sure that you have first upgrade to iTunes 8 as this solves a majority of bugs or issues that your iPhone would face.

Apple users are awaiting anxiously for the best kept secret of the new millennium, Apple’s iPhone 3.0 release time. Apple’s Vice President, Scott Forstall, made the announcement that the new iPhone 3.0 OS would be released sometime today, June 17, 2009. Users are waiting with iPhones connected to their pcs to be first in line for the software download.
Though the release time hasn’t been officially announced, many believe it will be between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Why the reason for the secrecy, you ask? More than likely, it is to prevent their servers from crashing or overloading when the release is made public. Yeah, like iPhone users haven't heard of Twitter!

I sure hope this 3.0 update isn't a waste of time. We'll all be connecting to Apple's servers in one big rush and if they don't crash or there aren't delays I'll be surprised. I'll also be surprised if the new OS lives up to the hype.

tandby iPhone users, the much anticipated OS 3.0 upgrade is arriving today between Noon and 2PM EST. You'll need to make sure your iPhone is connected to your PC and iTunes is up if you want to be one of the first to get the update!
Just got off the phone with apple support and they say to their knowledge sometime mid this afternoon :((

I stay up until 12 midnight waiting for the update to be available and what do i have to show for it? Nothing!!! :-( Hopefully they don't decide to reschedule the launch date. That would really make me upset.

They are going to release it based on geographical locations to prevent servers from crashing. Sorry West Coast

i think the west coast will be first because Apple is based in CA. And I got the 2.0 software at 9AM last year but I don't know.
I really want the new 3Gs, but thanks to AT&T, i must pay $600 to get an upgrade from my 3G. I guess I'll be satisfied with the new software. Thanks again, AT&T (die you putz)!
