Iowa Wrestling: Tony Ramos honored by Big Ten after dominant win

Iowa junior wrestler has been very dominant on the mat this season for the second-ranked Hawkeyes.

Tuesday, a few days after another big win, Ramos was named Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week. It was the third honor for Ramos in his career and the first time he has been honored this season.

Ramos won the honor after he beat third-ranked A.J. Schopp of Edinboro by a 9-0 major decision. Ramos is ranked No. 2 at 133 pounds this season and is currently 20-0 this season.

Against Schopp, Ramos scored two takedowns, two nearfall points and one reversal and piled up1:26 of riding time.
Ramos also is 4-0 against ranked opponents this year and has scored bonus points in 18 of his 20 matches, including a team-high nine pins, eight major decisions and one technical fall.

The Hawkeyes have now earned Big Ten weekly honors five times this season, which is more than any other school. Nick Moore earned the Big Ten honor on Jan. 29, while Derek St. John (Dec. 11) and Matt McDonough (Nov. 20 and Dec. 5) also have been honored.

The Hawkeyes (19-1, 8-0) return to the mat this weekend at the NWCA National Dual Meet Championships in Minneapolis. Competition begins Friday at 6 p.m.
