The Iowa wrestling team concluded its trip into the state of Michigan with another easy win on Sunday.
The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes won seven of the nine contested matches, earned bonus points in four of those wins and pummeled the Michigan State Spartans, 27-12, at Jensen Field House in East Lansing, Mich.
Iowa is now 4-0 in Big Ten action and 14-1 overall.
The bonus points were scored by second-ranked Tony Ramos at 133, ninth-ranked Mark Ballweg at 141, No. 19 Nick Moore at 165 and No. 6 Mike Evans at 174. Ramos, Evans and Ballweg all won by major decision, while Moore scored a pin against Nick Proctor.
Top-ranked Matt McDonough won his 40th straight match at 125 as he won an 8-2 decision. Top-ranked Derek St. John also remained unbeaten with a 12-6 victory at 157. Ramos also is undefeated on the year.
The only matches the Hawkeyes lost on the day came at 149 and 184 where the Spartans scored two upset wins. No. 19 Michael Kelly lost a 10-4 decision to Dan Oster and No. 11 Ethen Lofthouse lost 6-3 to No. 19 John Rizqallah. The Hawkeyes also forfeited heavyweight for the second straight dual.
“We look forward,” said head coach Tom Brands. “We have Minnesota next and we need to be ready.”
The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes will travel to Minneapolis to take on the third-ranked Gophers on Sunday. The dual begins at 3 p.m. and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
