Iowa wins Iowa State Regional, advances to Mat Mayhem Nat. Duals Championships

Top-seeded University of Iowa wrestling defeated No. 2 seed Oregon State, 22-14, in the finals of the Iowa State Regional Qualifying Tournament for the 2012 Mat Mayhem National Duals at Hilton Coliseum at Ames, Iowa Sunday.

The Hawkeyes become the third team to advance to the Championship Round to be held the weekend of Feb. 20-21 at a location to be determinedThe University of Minnesota won the Rutgers Regional Saturday; earlier Sunday, University of Illinois claimed the Cornell Regional by upsetting the host team. A fourth Regional Qualifying Tournament is also taking place Sunday at Oklahoma State.

Because it was the No. 1 seed, Iowa had a bye in the first round. In the semifinals, the Hawkeyes got a decisive 31-3 victory over No. 4 seed Virginia Tech, qualifying for the finals at the Iowa State Regionals.

Oregon State also drew a bye. The Beavers then defeated the host school, No. 3 seed Iowa State, 27-12 to find themselves in the Regional finals.

Iowa won six of ten bouts, with two of those wins generating bonus points, thanks to technical falls from Tony Ramos at 133 pounds, and Ethen Lofthouse at 174.

Oregon State also got two bonus-point victories with major decision wins from Taylor Meeks at 197, and, in an upset, Roger Pena, ranked No. 18 at 157, a major over No. 5 Derek St. John.
