The University of Iowa track and field program announced today that Babatunde Amosu will compete for the Hawkeyes in 2013.
Amosu transfers to Iowa after one season at Texas A&M, where he placed runner-up in the triple jump at the 2012 Big XII Indoor Championships.
“He’s a great addition to the team,” said Iowa assistant coach and director of recruiting Clive Roberts. “He was a runner-up in one of the premier conferences in the triple jump and one of the better freshmen in the country. So for us to add him mid-year obviously bolsters our roster tremendously.”
Amosu, a London, England, native, attended Selhurts High School in London and competed for Coydon Harriers in club track and field for five years. He won the 2010 English Schools Championships and finished his prep career with a personal best 52 feet in the triple jump, a mark that would rank third all-time at Iowa.
Amosu will have three years of eligibility left. He will be one several newcomers vying to fill the void left by all-Big Ten triple jumper Troy Doris, who graduated from Iowa with four All-American honors and school records.
“We’re very happy to have Babatunde,” added Roberts. “We expect great things to happen. Not only with him but with the horizontal jumpers we’ve currently got in the program, which is a very good group on paper. Obviously performance is going to dictate how great they become.”
