Joe Gibbons, one of the all-time mat greats at Iowa State in the 1980s, will be the one and only guest this week for the “On The Mat” show for Wed., April 30, the weekly broadcast announced Monday via email.
Gibbons was a four-time Iowa high school state wrestling champion for Waterloo Columbus and Ames High School. He stayed in Ames to attend Iowa State, where he was a four-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Eight champ, and an NCAA champion for the Cyclones, winning the 142-pound title by defeating Princeton’s John Orr, 4-3, in the 1985 NCAAs. Gibbons is one of only five Cyclones to have placed among the top four wrestlers in each of the four NCAAs. The others: Dwight Hinson (1995-98), Joe Heskett (1999-2002), Cael Sanderson (1999-2002), and Jake Varner (2007-2010).
Joe, along with the rest of the Gibbons family, will receive the Family Legacy Award at the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, on June 7.
