The bats were hot for the Iowa softball team against Belmont during the final game of the Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas, on Sunday.
Six different Hawkeyes had at least one hit, and sophomore pitcher Chelsea Lyon threw a three-hit shutout as Iowa improved to 3-2 with an 8-0 win.
"We talked about finishing strong today on the weekend and the girls did a nice job of that," Iowa head coach Marla Looper said. "Our hitters did a nic job of driving the ball and putting them in the gaps."
Lyon gave up three hits in the shortened five-inning game and struck out four and walked two. It was her second victory of the season.
The Hawkeyes scored two quick runs in the first inning as Megan Blank single and then scored on Kayla Massey's RBI single. Katie Keim also had an RBI single in the inning.
Ashley Akers made it 3-0 with another RBI single and then Iowa added three runs in the fourth to make ot 7-0. In the fourth inning, Liz Watkins delivered the knockout blow with two-run double.
Blank had two hits and two runs, while Keim added two hits and one RBI in the win for Iowa. Belmont fell to 0-5 following the loss.
Both Blank and Akers were named to the all-tournament for the Hawkeyes. Blank hit .583 and scored six runs in her first collegiate tournament. Akers posted a .500 batting average in the tourney.
