In an effort to escape the winter cold and snow, police say an Iowa man stole a vehicle and drove hundreds of miles south to Mississippi in search of warmer weather.
KWWL-TV reported Monday that Harold Schneider, 46, faces one count of first-degree theft after he stole a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon from a home in Iowa City on Dec. 31.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office says Schneider then drove the vehicle about 600 miles south to Mississippi, where he was pulled over and arrested in Panola County days later on Jan. 2.
Schneider told police that he stole the jeep because he was tired of the cold and snow and wanted to go south where it was warm.
The criminal complaint says Schneider also sold several items to raise gas money for the trip.
Schneider remains in jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
Ironically, Mississippi is coming off of one of its most extreme weeks of weather with tornadoes, floods, ice and snow storms all hitting portions of the state.
