Iowa junior tailback Mark Weisman was added to the Maxwell Award Watch List recently. He is one of 12 players in the nation to make the newest list as it was announced by the Maxwell Football Club on Wednesday.
Semifinal candidates will be announced Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Weisman, a 236-pounder from Illinois, leads Iowa with 624 rushing yards and three touchdowns through six games. He leads the Big Ten Conference and ranks fourth in the nation in rushing attempts, while ranking third in the conference in rushing yards per game at 104.
Iowa’s top tailback has run for more than 100 yards in four games this season and eight times in his career. He had 180 yards against Missouri State and also gained 147 and 145, respectively, in the road wins over Minnesota. The Hawkeyes as a team gained at least 200 yards on the ground in their first five games this season.
Weisman missed two games last year and still ran for 815 yards and two scores after joining the team as a walk-on fullback last summer. He didn’t take over full time a season ago until game three.
Earlier this season, Weisman was named to the Doak Walker Award preseason Watch List and the College Football Performance Awards Running Back Trophy Watch List.
Iowa (4-2, 1-1) travels to undefeated Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Hawkeyes return home to host Northwestern Saturday, Oct. 26.
Tickets remain for all three remaining home games in Kinnick Stadium. Tickets can be purchased at hawkeyesports.com, by calling 1-800-IA-HAWKS, or in person at the UI athletics ticket office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
