Iowa Football: Scherff, Morris named all-Americans by Phil Steele

James Morris wasn’t good enough to make the all-Big Ten Conference first team when the coaches of the league and media members who cover them came out with their all-league teams last month.

However, the Hawkeye senior from Solon, Iowa, was placed on Phil Steele’s All-American fourth team.

Phil Steele Magazine is placed in high regard. It also listed Iowa offensive lineman Brandon Scherff as a second team all-American, while several other Hawkeyes were named to the all-Big Ten squads.

Scherff was previously named second team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and College Sports Madness, and earned third team All-America honors from Athlon Sports and Lindy’s.

Scherff, who also got shafted by the league media when they voted him second team all-Big Ten, started 12 games at left tackle in 2013. The league’s coaches, Sporting News and College Sports Madness all named him first team all-Big Ten, while Athlon’s placed him on the second team.

Morris has started 41 games in his career and ranks sixth all-time at Iowa with 392 career tackles. He was second on the team in 2013 with 99 but also led the team with 15.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and four interceptions.

Scherff was named first team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele, along with senior defensive back B.J. Lowery and junior wide receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley, who was selected for his play on punt returns.

Morris was named to Steele’s second team, along with senior linebacker Anthony Hitchens, senior tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz and senior kicker Mike Meyer.

Hawkeyes earning third team recognition included junior running back Mark Weisman, senior offensive lineman Brett Van Sloten, senior linebacker Christian Kirksey and junior defensive lineman Carl Davis.

Iowa (8-4) will meet LSU (9-3) in the 2014 Outback Bowl on Jan. 1. Game time is 12:03 p.m. for the contest that will be televised on ESPN.
